Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

It's a nice little spot in the neighborhood to visit. They have a place outside to sit and eat which is kind of cool. Feature request: please add APPLE PAY support for 5 stars!

If you like deep dish pizza that is 95% crust with a small coating of okay sauce and cheese, this is the place for you. It's very reasonably priced for what you get, but it's definitely not the best pizza around. I've been with friends who tried various pasta dishes and salads. They were satisfied but not eager to return again.

I will say that the delivery was right on time, and that is the only positive. We ordered two pizzas, one thick and one thin, and what a disappointment. They were both bland and unimpressive. Extremely pricey, and in my opinion they were not worth the money. Don't see us ordering from here again.
(2)Carrie Y.
Used to love this place, took them an hour and a half to deliver mediocre food. Wasn't hot, just ok
(2)Cheyenne M.
Ordered pizza online and they messed it up, but whatever, even the right order couldn't have saved this review. The pizza was so mediocre and not worth the price. The crust is too thick and lacks any flavor--they need to salt this thing. The toppings, while fresh, had no seasoning so it just tasted like slightly cooked tomatoes and mushrooms. I'll add that the positive reviews on Yelp are likely from people in the area that maybe have had this pizza since they were kids because there's no way this pizza is objectively a four or five star.

The food and atmosphere were both good my only problem with my visit would be one of the advert programs Salerno's used and how difficult the front cashier / host made the process ... Belly bites is a great method to draw in new guests such as my wife and i. We came in and mentioned that we have belly both my wife and i ... And that we wanted to utilize the free bite that was advertised ... Mine was on my phone so utilizing the free bite was rather easy my wife does not have the app yet and the script online said all she needed to do was check in with belly ... After about 10 min they finally agreed to giving us what the bite had promised and only after making both my wife and i feel like fools ... As if we were some how being dishonest ... I may give them another shot ... The food was decent ... But that is why i gave them a 3 star.

Ordered pastas and salad for delivery this weekend. Food was pretty good and delivery was fast. The portions are huge!!!!( 3 meals from each pasta). Will definitely order again.

I wanted lasagna. A big chunk of it. Man, did this place deliver! I don't go for Italian food often because I know I can make it cheaper at home... Lasagna however, a good one takes the right amount of love and considering my husband can't really eat it... I just had to get it here. My parents ordered the supreme specialty pizza. They love thin crust (odd because they're from Chicago... Right?!) and I like deep dish so they got to enjoy that all for themselves. Hence my lasagna order ;-) The pizza is cut into squares which is great for those who don't care for crust, you get the inner slices. The toppings were quite generous and the sausage was my moms favorite. Really good flavors. My lasagna was the size of my head, seriously. I ate 3/4 of it and took the rest home. The waiter was impressed, lol. The sauce was sweet and had tomato bits; the cheese was ooey gooey and the noodles really held up during the cook time. The pizzas come from a separate kitchen so our good came out a few minutes apart which is fine because the entrees come out steaming! As do the pizzas; so you'll want time to let things cool. The front of the restaurant has gelato and other sweet treats. We were too full to get anything to go though. My dad has been coming here since his HS days; I think he enjoyed a trip down memory lane (even though it's a different location). You can get pizza by the slice too.
(5)Naureen R.
This is a review for their pizza by the slice. Went in to grab a slice to fix my insane pizza craving. I'll give the place 3 stars only because for $5 and 20-some cents you get one-fourth of a medium sized pizza and a pop. I'll also give 3 stars because the kind elderly man at the register won my heart. But the pizza itself is very 'meh'. It's not NY style, nor is it Chicago style. It's more like pizza bread rather than a slice of pizza, with a thick layer of bread through the whole slice (not just at the crust) with sauce and cheese. The bread overpowered everything. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it was a little reminiscent of what Sbarro's pizza used to be a few years ago. I'm guessing their other entree items and pizzas made to order are better because there were quite a few walk-ins despite me coming in at a rather odd time -- so if you have some time on your hands, maybe check those out instead!
(3)Mariam A.
Wow my boss has always been raving on about this pizza, he basically called it crack and now I see why. They ordered for our whole division at work and I've never seen so many pizzas finish so quickly. The cheese was definitely my favorite. This perhaps may beat my all-time favorite thin crust, Lou Malnatis. It's definitely more pan style and the crush is medium thick but very delicious, almost buttery? I loved it!
(5)Tom M.
It's just not what it use to be. Had pizza last night and it had no taste. My last two experiences were similar. Not consistent.
(2)Leslie B.
My favorite place for a quick slice in Oak Park. Warning: one slice is really two. So needless to say, their portions are generous :)
(4)Maria G.
I really like their martinis! I was wondering where the bar was when I walk then it seemed weird but it was tucked in the middle. It is a really nice cozy place the pizza was good! However their martinis were really good.. Would like to come back again and try something else.
(4)David O.
This place serves really huge portions but the dishes lack that party in your mouth flavor. Dnt get me wrong, they hav plenty of sauce but I guess not enuf salt. At least it's a cute lil fancy place.
(2)Karl P.
I gave them one star and that is being very nice. My company orders from here all the time. OMG... The pizza is so dried out and very little sauce on it. Its like they just put a tablespoon of sauce on each pizza. The fried chicken is so over cooked and dried out and hard. The pasta is ok needs alot more sauce. Idk what is wrong with this place you would think if they cater to a large company on a regular basis they would take some pride in their food. I would NEVER pay for their food or goto the resturant on my own person time. Im sorry I am just speaking the truth.
(1)Rachel C.
So I usually just grab takeout from this place, but I didn't call ahead so as I was waiting for my food I took a look around ....Beautiful spot. I had no idea how big the dining area actually is (It's huge!) and so beautiful. The bar area is a perfect romantic setting for a date or hangout. Service is fast and very friendly. Management is accommodating. I'm def gonna start dining in from now on.
(5)Peter G.
The food is good and the prices are fair. You need to try the huge Pizza slice and a Pop for 5.00 you won't finish it that's how big it is. The owner is very nice also I will be back
(5)Kristin M.
I ordered here from work with a couple of girls the other night. A few days ago a different co worker offered and I thought the pizza just didn't look that good. Tonight was different! The crust was soft and think and you can tell it just came out of the oven! Delicious!
(4)Matt G.
Definitely one of the better pizzas out there- I am a fan! We picked up several pizzas for a group of hungry co-workers tonight. By the time the food got back to our office it was still piping hot. The pizza itself here is terrific- it's got a nice thin crust that isn't quite too thin. The sauce is what makes this pizza special though- it's a sweeter sauce with a hint of pepper in it. Toppings were applied perfectly- we had 1 sausage, 1 pepperoni, and 1 veggie with green peppers and mushrooms. All 3 were outstanding. Definitely a high quality pizza in a town that has a pretty high bar for pizza. I'm looking forward to coming back here again soon.
(4)Christina B.
Good pizza, great delivery time, but I can't get over the prices. I can go to Gullivers and get a much larger pizza for half the price. Their prices are insane for the food. Last time we ordered breaded mushrooms...they were soggy and the sauces spilled open on our mushrooms. I've ordered from Salernos a bunch of times, but it definitely is not my favorite place. It's more of a last resort. BUT I will say that I have always had our food delivered, maybe it's better when you dine in. Who knows.
(3)Tony L.
Been coming here for about five years now and I have been happy with their service and food. Only gripe is the pizza is pricey, but it is very consistent. You know what you are going to get every time you order from there. And I am OK with that.
(4)Shaun S.
Ordered a root beer, wasn't handed anything initially and when I asked the driver, I got a dr. pepper.... Ordered French fries, got onion rings.... Asked for extra crispy hot wings, and I got wings drenched in sauce... What happened Salerno's?
(1)Aj C.
The customer service was deplorable. Do they only say hello to certain types? The female receptionist was so rude, she should be taught better. The food was okay, I had my first date with my girl friend there 6 years ago, Today the chicken in the fettuccine was over cooked or old. Normally a good place to eat, reminds me of a regular place now, not a classy Italian place anymore?
(2)Rachel C.
During our annual 2-3 week vacation in our motorhome one of our stops is in the area to visit friends. While here, Salerno's is a MUST at least twice during our stay. Living in South Florida where good pizza is nonexistent, we always order 4-6 par-baked pies to bring back with us. They freeze excellently and we can usually ration them well enough to last until the following year. In regard to our last visit, my husband's birthday just happened to fall smack dab in the middle of our visit. Considering he was born and raised in the area and some of his old friends still live near by, I wanted to plan a surprise party for him. I contacted the restaurant several months prior to our visit and spoke with Emilio. He was extremely helpful and very accommodating. The party was a success! The food was awesome (as always) and the service was excellent (even with us being a large party consisting of adults and kids). I just hope they forgave us for making such a mess with the birthday decorations. That's when 20% or more gratuity is a must!
(5)Pieter W.
The service, atmosphere and most of the food at Salerno's is pretty top notch, especially for the price. So why three stars? The pizza by-the-slice! Personally I like pizza that is either classic thin-crust or deep-dish/stuffed, but these slices were neither. Thick, bready, doughy, and not very much cheese or sauce. Not for me. On the other hand the calamari and caesar salad were both delcious, and the thin-crust pizza that the couple next to us ordered looked pretty good. One thing I noticed was that a lot of people were coming here for desert only, which leads me to believe the desert here might be pretty good. Just stay away from the pizza by-the-slice unless you really like that thick-crust doughy style
(3)DontYelp A.
The service is always pleasant, the food is decent. I'm not a fan of the pizza-a little too much bread for me, but I love the chicken parm sandwich and they always are willing to customize it for me! Delivery is usually pretty quick too if I can't pick it up myself. Overall-pretty good neighborhood gem!
(4)The J.
4 stars for their pizza and awesome bread, but everything else brings it down a star. The pizza is thick crust pizza, but you can ask for thin. They are also generous with the cheese and the sauce is has a lot of flavor. It is a bit more expensive than the local competition, but it is still exceptional. My biggest problem is the lack of space in the dining room. You can't sit down or get up without bumping into someone sitting at the table next to you. Also, I have come here with large groups and there always seems to be a problem with our order when coming in a group. If you wanna give this place a try, I would suggest getting a pizza for carryout/delivery.
(3)John G.
Pizza mediocre. Gnocchi ok but the two sauces ordered were dull and boring. Salads were small.
(3)George K.
Great Pizza. I've been a fan of Salerno's since the 1980s! Now that they deliver, it's even better. Drivers are polite, friendly and fast! Pizza is traditional Chicago pizza. I love the thin crust pizza, but the thick is my wife's choice. Two small pizzas gives us two nights of fine dining. Yep, pizza. It's what's for dinner.
(5)Alex H.
This is our pizza delivery of choice in Oak Park. We like the thin crust b/c it's not too too thin, still pretty hearty and the sauce is tasty, the cheese is pretty generous. We've had all the classics and keep ordering spinach-tomato-onion-mushroom, which is the best tasting vegetarian pizza I've had. It's also pretty reliable standard Italian food, too. Pastas cooked correctly, not fancy, just right. We ate in one time and ordered more traditional entrees - roasted chicken, salads - and we were a little dismayed at the time it took to cook. Kids food was there fairly quickly and they were done before we got ours. Service was extremely polite and attentive, though, so I'm assuming a blameless delay was the cause.
(4)Chris G.
It got two stars because of good delivery time. The pizza lacks flavor and the crust is really thick so best bet is to go with thin crust. Even the sausage was bland. We paid $29 for a large pie and a slice. Good thing I'm already married, this would have been horrible for a first date. Won't order here again unless undesirable guest come, they'll get the hint then.
(2)Mark Z.
Good thin crust pizza. Never had a bad pie. The chicken and sausage just thinking about it, I only want more. The Rush on Roosevelt

I was not satisfied at all! The dining area was nice and cozy. The restaurant seemed to be nice and clean, which is a plus. Wait staff was nice. The problem for me was the food, which happens to be the most important part. The minestrone soup tastes like it's from a can with a handful of frozen veggies thrown in. My salad was so wet there was a puddle of water in the bottom of the bowl. I ordered a slice of pizza and it was barely warm. I would have been more satisfied with something from my freezer. I would give them a second chance if at least one of the food items was right but it wasn't.
(1)Nicole S.
This review is purely for service as I did not order the pizza for myself. I live on the north side of Chicago. My friend, who just had a baby, lives in Berwyn. I wanted to send her and her husband dinner tonight, seeing how they've been through a lot in the last few weeks. Every other delivery pizza place in the Berwyn area would not let me order the pizza and pay with a credit card since I would not be the one accepting the delivery. Are you kidding? You're getting paid! Irregardless, the young lady who answered the phone at Salerno's was super friendly and gave me no issues whatsoever. She even allowed me to pay the tip in advance so that all my friend has to do is answer the door. Way to go, Salerno's! If I'm ever in the area, I will be eating here and nowhere else just because you helped to make this easy request even easier!
(5)Collette Y.
I've been there 3 times in the past 3 months and I admit what draws me there is the minestrone soup and hot tasty bread and butter. I had their Italian Cod, which had red peppers, olives, mushroom and a sauce on it. Very delicious! Parking is plentiful, atmosphere inviting, service speedy and attentive....and I'll definitely be back soon.
(5)Matt M.
The pizza is quite all-right. The prices are a little high. The location is really cool. The meat lovers style pizza with bits of bacon is really good new york style pizza. Unfortunately they do not have deep dish. The service is friendly and quick. Its worth checking out if you are in the area.
(3)Dave H.
Stopped here for lunch with a friend today. The lunch deal was outstanding - $5 for a large slice (basically 1/4 of a pie) and a soda. The pizza was delicious - thick crust, crunchy on the bottom, but not too much. Overall great atmosphere and I'll look to come back for dinner sometime soon.
(4)Maranda T.
The always send lots of food. Food is good and it's well priced. Drivers are always friendly.

I recently came here when I was in the area for work. Its probably the best restaurant for veggies around without crossing the 290 expressway to proper Oak Park. The place is nice inside, and larger than it looks outside. There is the carryout area, a nice seating area, and a bar area with high tables and TVs. I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana sandwich and it came with home cut style fries -both came piping hot and the portions were large! I finished only half of the sandwich and had to take the other half as leftover. The sandwich was good, but not remarkable. It was basically a french bread with breaded eggplant and marina sauce (I could make it better with frozen Trader Joe's brand, but its neither here nor there). I finished the fries... which were good and not at all greasy. However, with no fault of theirs, after finishing my meal, I had the distinct taste residue of fries in my mouth. I'm curious about the pizza with all yelpers giving decent reviews, and of course Johnny T. giving high marks to the Pan version.
(3)Angela T.
The pizza itself earns four stars. The service, particularly the waitstaff and delivery service, take them down a star. If getting carry out or willing to deal with the wait in restaurant, you will be treated to a wonderfully seasoned sauce, addictively yeasty crust and lots of cheese. Delivery? The pie may arrive cold and half baked. Not worth it. The service in the restaurant is so hands off, you are craning your neck trying to spot the servers and bus boys. We don't order often since we are in South Berwyn, but when we do it is so tasty!
(4)Robin K.
It is a good thing that the food is good here, because this place has some of the rudest people working there. In fact, I think that it is a prerequisite to work here. Over the years, it NEVER gets better. I have never gone to there take out counter and had someone say " thank you" after I use my hard- earned money to buy food. Last time that I went, I was very specific that the last time I ordered they forgot an item. Instead of, " I'm sorry, let me give that to you free of charge this time" I got no response, AND THEN THEY FORGOT IT AGAIN THIS TIME!!! Seriously, I do not think any small business owner makes enough to loss even one customer. Note to owner: TEACH YOUR EMPLOYEES TO SAY THANK YOU. It goes a long way.
(2)Claire M.
Man, I used to eat there a LOT. I've sampled many an item from their menu, all of it being quite good. ESPECIALLY their creamy garlic salad dressing, and most recently, ordering pizza by the slice to go. I've been trying to watch both my wallet and my waistline lately so our trips have really decreased in frequency which actually is nice because it seems like more of a treat when we do go. If there's one thing I've learned from eating the majority of my meals somewhere other than home, it's that it's just food - as exciting as eating peanut butter and jelly in my own kitchen. When I don't do it as often, then it becomes special! As I said before, the pizza is very good, I've had their cheese ravioli, baked cavatelli with vodka sauce, manicotti, gnocchi, etc and never had anything I disliked. Also of note is the dessert! At one time, they had Kit Kat gelato which was just... sinfully delicious. Tiramisu: also tasty - and the portion is quite large. It would take me two or three sitting to finish it. I'm not Italian and I don't pretend to be "in the know" about authentic Italian food (maybe it is, maybe some would say it isn't) but for me, this is juuuuuust fine. We used their website once for online ordering. Very nice.

I admit..was pretty disappointed in my dinning experience here tonight... Atmosphere was cute..comfy..all the old timers were hanging at the bar - they were hilarious I may add! -- Wasn't about their soup or garlic dressing - Been years!! (And I means years!) Since I've had a great creamy Italian like this! Wasn't my hubby sampler platter either! - GREAT! Sausage! Mushrooms were super tasty! And they make a great ravoli! It was my food...the linguini and clams that did it. Was so excited! Everything was fantastic up to that point! Couldn't wait to dig in!! Unfortunately, wasn`t meant to be. - the noodles were super buttery...and yes for you butter lovers! There really is a thing as too much! (Belly`s pretty upset over this..BEEN complaining ever since!! ) ..and the clams were gritty. Shudder!!! But, aside from that... would most definitely eat here again! And no, not being a sarcastic ass either! What did it for me was their service! Wasn't going to complain...Been there..done that..gotten blown off on the few occasions that I've had to. Live a pretty stressful life during the work week..just want a relaxing time! Go eat and enjoy myself! But, because of that...wasn't going to say anything this time around. It was him! My husband made me do it!! Very glad I did! Was completely different this time around...not only apologized...but stood behind their food and comped us for it! You know, as a business owner..this speaks volumes to me!! Very. Very much appreciated! And you know what?! Because of this...we`ll definitely be back! Getting myself some of that homemade sausage next time around!! And trying some of their desserts too! Their gelato looked fab on the way out!! Really think you should too!!

Ahhh.... Salerno's..... the pizza of my youth..... and still a perennial fave! I have just as many stories of celebrations, laughter and good times at the original 16th & East location as any other old-timer here, but today proved you can't go home again! The pizza was always the draw at Salerno's and I used to laugh at a buddy who ordered his with extra cheese, because that was like asking for a myocardial infarction on thick crust! Never in my life have I been able to see the tomato sauce on a Salerno's pizza, that is, until today. We ordered the usual extra large to have plenty to take home, freeze, and reheat. Yeah, right...... The crust was thick, doughy and undercooked; the sauce reeked of tomato paste; you needed a magnifying glass to find the sausage; and the cheese was basically in dots over the top of the pizza. WTF? And, to top it all off, I've been suffering with a major case of agita for the last four hours! LSS - if you want the taste of old-time Salerno's, head out to Crest Hill to a place called Giovan's (they took over from Salerno's and haven't changed the recipe.) This place DOES NOT offer up the original Salerno's Pizza, no matter what the slogan on the menu says!
(1)Angela U.
We visited here on a Friday night at dinner hour. I figured there would be a wait, it was only about 3 minutes. The hostess is Betty Loren Maltese former town president of Cicero, and that added to the charm. To be seated by someone who gets as much news coverage as Rod Blagovech was unique. Service was excellent. We both had martinis and they were great. I had the sampler plate for 16.94, you tried all their main course on one plate. WOW! Pizza was exceptional. Definitely quality ingredients, and the owner visited our table to ask how everything was. We will be back at Salerno's soon.

So, I ordered this pizza about a month ago and never wrote a review. Shame on me, I know. In any case, I was reminded to write one last night when I ate the other half of the pizza. I know you're thinking, "Ewww. Gross, you ate month old pizza?" Well, yes I did b/c I used my super awesome food saver and froze the other half of the pizza in hopes that it would save. In any case, at first what I concluded to be an incredibly stupid idea after pulling it out of the vacuum package with many of the pieces sticking together turned into perfectly delicious meal (after the pizza warmed a little, all the pieces came apart with ease) that reminded me how incredibly impressed with this place I was. My pizza consisted of the perfect amount of cheese with great sausage and pepperoni, tasty onions and a little bit of italian seasoning. It was only recently that I was even able to eat pizza with a thinner crust than pan because having grown up in St. Louis, I was scarred by the disgustingness of cracker-thin provel-covered St. Louis style pizza, and this crust was great - a little bit thicker than a thin crust but still a good crispiness to it. The pizza bread appetizer the boyfriend and I ordered, however, was totally not worth the extra money. I would definitely try other appetizers from here though. Oh, and the free liter of soda - well, the boyfriend drank it and didn't die, so I guess it's ok. He said it tasted really flat and overly syrup-y, but I don't think anyone expects greatness out of a free liter of soda with the business' name on it unless that name is Coca-Cola. All in all, I would totally order from here again and would even consider freezing half of it again just so long as I don't put the pieces on top of each other again b/c that could have truly been a pizza-catastrophe. Ahh, it seems my list of good pizza places in the area just keeps on growing.

Been coming to Salerno's for years since the 16th St location was still in business. They have moved around a little bit, but still kept the original taste from when we were kids. It's got a small dining room, and a bar area that is all very nice and a great place to go for a business meeting or just to catch up with friends for lunch. It has automatic WIFI and there is some outdoor seating on the nice days. Like the previous posts, there is very limited parking in the small lot behind, but there is a long street that runs 200 yards that is open on both sides.
(5)Greg E.
The pizza was very weak and way overpriced for the quality received. The crust was too think and bland. There was way too much cheese, and the sauce left a lot to be desired. Never getting pizza here again.
(1)Paul N.
Horribly bland, tasteless, dry bread is what this pizza is,they cheat u on the toppings and sauce,THIS IS NOT ARNIE'S SALERNO'S FROM 16TH,if u want arnie's recipe go to Hodgkins.
(1)Chris J.
I have to admit, my reason for going to Salerno's wasn't the pizza - - it was the staff. Specifically, the host, former Cicero Town President Betty Loren Maltese, who just started this week as the hostess after being released federal prison. As someone who grew up in the area, I've been watching her case with interest for years, and didn't want to pass up a chance to actually meet her in person. While the media reports billed it as an "upscale pizzeria," I would put it on par more with a Giordano's or Lou Malenati's - - pleasant atmosphere, good drinks, and solid pizza. My group of four was promptly seated (we had a reservation) and had two pizzas - - both thin crust, with multiple toppings. Overall, the experience was good, and I would definitely go back. Betty was very accommodating, and allowed us to take a picture with her at the end of the meal. I would definitely go back!
(4)Seamus S.
Meh is right.... I went there for a slice for lunch and the pizza tested like it was left out overnight. Cheese was rock hard.

So, my husband goes to Salerno's all the time with the kids. I decided to go this one time (it was about a month ago)...and I regret it. We were seated in a room off to the side, ok no biggie. When the waitress, Joanne, finally arrived (it took a long time) we ordered apps, they came kids ate them, all is ok. We ordered a large pizza and I ordered a pasta dinner. Well, the pizza came out 45 minutes later, if not longer, and I sat waiting for my food. I asked Joanne numerous times if it was coming out and she finally checked on it and delivered it, 15 minutes after everyone else was done eating. I asked for it to go seeing it had been a long evening already. Oh, and I also asked for the salad I was supposed to get before the meal. ahhhh it was just an annoying night. I asked to speak with the manager...he was MIA. Had to call him on his cell phone and he basically asked me "what did I want", like I was looking for a free meal (this one cost me $75!!). I told him to train his staff, refused free desserts and I would never be back again. What a terrible expensive experience.

I've had the pizza here a couple of times and it's good, but recently had it and got a big bite of a plastic bag or something with it. Gross. Makes me wonder what other sanitary issues they have. Tried the cannoli here too and it's ok at best.

Good food, good atmosphere. Go in for a slice of pizza (super big and super good price) and a side salad and you will be happy. We have only had pizza here, but my kids and hub love it. Family friendly.

Grew up in Forest Park and always went to the original salerno's on 16th St. In Berwyn as a kid. Best pizza in Chicago in my opinion! I occasionally am able to get to the new location in Oak Park, & it is always a great experience!

THIS IS THE PLACE FOR REALLY YUMMY PIZZA!! Whenever I order out for pizza, this is my FAV place, love the thick crust that holds up to the very tasty toppings. I like to have chicken, spinach, and mushroom on mine. I always eat the pizza slice and save the crust for last!

Came back to the old neighborhood and saw that Salerno's has moved from their 16th & Wesley location to a few blocks north onto Roosevelt Rd. We always got the pan style, even though we're not fans of the thick crust in general, that's how good it is. There's something very delicious about the dough that makes it irresistible, even though there's very little sauce on top, which you'd think would make it worse. My mother would always buy their dough by the pound, about $2 per lb. Prices aren't too bad either.

You are never going to eat better pizza then Salerno's! It has been a family favorite of ours forever. my recommendation: -order it to go (although it is also very tasty in the restaurant, but i always end up eating all of their amazing bread with olive oil and parm. and never have enough room for pizza) -take it home and eat it, but make sure you order enough for leftovers. -wake up and have a pizza breakfast!! and while you're nuking some za, eat a piece or two cold! Their pizza is wonderful, and i don't know how its possible but even better the next day!

For me, Salerno's will always be the REAL Chicago pizza. Shortly after immigrating to the U.S., the Salerno family opened the pizzeria in 1966. Like Frank D., I was practically fed Salerno's thick crust cheese pizza by bottle from the ripe age of 2. My mom regales me with stories of how they used to take me there as a child and the waitresses thought I was so cute that they would give me Susan B. Anthony coins and little trinkets. I remember looking at the mural of Venice on the wall of the old restaurant in Berwyn as if in a dream... Fast forward three decades: they moved into a much smaller place in Oak Park and no one's giving me anything free! A lot has changed (modern decor, different location, updated feel), but thankfully the pizza has remained EXACTLY the same. The crust is buttery and significant - it's the strong, silent type. The sauce is delicious and savory with no hint of over-acidic tomato paste taste. And then, the cheese. THE CHEESE. It's hefty, rich and succulent and somehow always has perfect little browned crunchy spots on top, as if the oven lovingly cooked it to perfection itself. As I said, this is real Chicago pizza. I like all types of pizza, but if you're looking for Uno's or Napoletan-style thin crust, or even if you're looking for (god forbid) New York style pizza, do not expect it here. Come with an open mind to experience a whole new (but very old indeed) pizza experience.

Are you in the mood for homemade sauce and meatballs? Yes I said HOMEMADE. This place has it all. When you walk in there is a little take out area, towards the back is the dining room. A bit small, but who cares. lol. They make their own sausage, and meatballs. Mama mia! Also, on the menu.....homemade ravioli, pasta, sandwiches, salads, mmmm this is NOT Olive Garden. I love the staff here. Everyone is always really cheerfull. The bar area is pretty nice, with dark wood chairs. The only thing I have to say is that I don't like the wine list. You would figure being an italian restaurant this place would have killer wine. EH, guess again. The wine is just mediocre really. But, everything else makes up for it. Come here with your family, or special occasion. You will have a very relaxing time here. Mancha! (is that spelled right?)

I finally decided to try Salerno's, which I pass on my way to and from work every day. It was a very good experience for the four of us dining on a Tuesday evening. My daughter had pasta with a wine sauce and clams. She loved that there was a mound of clams on top, instead of the standard 5-6. I loved my penne pasta with pesto and chicken. It was freshly made and the taste was amazing. My teenage son went with a prime rib sandwich, which he couldn't finish. Wait staff was very prompt and courteous and the waiter kept bringing more fresh, hot bread. The appetizer was calamari and it wasn't too battered and greasy. It was fresh and delicious. We will be coming back to try the pizza, which is supposed to be their specialty.

Fried mushrooms were AWESOME.. fresh and to DIE FOR!! Meat lovers pizza was very good.. a little thick for my taste, BUT very tasty. The reason why it got 3 stars was service. I felt like we were being rushed out of the place and they were rather rude from the moment we walked in. I almost turned around and walked out.. BUT I heard the food was GREAT. I want to go back.. but I am still unsure. I will have to update my review after the next time.

After reading everyone's reviews for Salernos, I finally decided to give them a try. I ordered the highly recommended calamari and pizza for delivery. We received our order in a reasonable amount of time. That was the only good thing about Salernos. The calamari tasted kinda chewy, and the batter was on the heavy side. I have definitely had better calamari (Lettuce Entertain You restaurants). I also asked for extra crispy crust on the pizza, but got soggy crust instead....kinda hard to mess up on a thin crust pizza! I ate one slice of the pizza and threw the remainder of it away, along with the calamari. Learned my lesson the expensive way, but I'll stick to ordering Paisan's from now on.
(1)Missy L.
LOVE the pizza. They have a lunch special of large pizza slice and pop for $5.00.
(5)Rhonda G.
We like to grab pizza from here by the slice and they are HUGE! Ask them to cut the slice in half and you easily have two meals or one meal for two people. Very filling and very tasty...gooey cheesy goodness! Huge slice with a can of pop for around 5 bucks. Worth it because like I've mentioned....they are huge!

Went here in search of Betty. It must have been her night off :( However I am a fan for life as I FINALLY found a perfect, tasty red sauce to suit my craves. I have looked high and dry, it has been WAY too long since I had some good Italian food. I also tried the thin crust garlic pizza- heavenly, but I could do without all the excessive grease on it. The warm tableside crusty bread and olive oil were phenomenal. Waiter service was very prompt, attentive, and courteous. The whole place was extremely clean, modern, and inviting.

Great pizza parking is extremely difficult but that pizza is great!!!

Oh Salerno's. Where do I begin? I was raised eating from here. And like any respectable chicagoan, my parents started feeding me pizza before I had teeth. That's about 24 years of Salerno's eating. But sometimes my heart aches for the good old days. They used to be located in Berwyn, and the pizza was essentially a celestial blend of meat, cheese, veggies and sauce smothered over the best carbohydrate-slate known to man: the pizza dough. Then they moved to a tiny location on the north side of Berwyn and the quality went downhill. Slowly, they rose again to their previous level of deliciousness. Then they moved - again- right across the street to their current Oak Park location. After some quick growing pains, I think their pizza is still as good as it has ever been (95% of the time, anyway). My main gripe about you, Salerno's, is the price and service! The price doesn't look bad on the menu, but somehow a single pizza with a few toppings seems to always break the bank! What is going on? Also, the delivery time is often unacceptably long. C'mon, Salerno's! Nevertheless, there is a reason we keep going back - I feel like maybe this place can sometimes be the pizzeria version of an abusive spouse who you just can't seem to end it with. THE PIZZA IS SO F'ING GOOD!!!!!!!! Also, they sell GINORMOUS slices of pizza for pretty cheap, and sometimes when I just am in dire need of a Salerno's fix but don't want to order a whole 'za, I settle for a slice of cheese/pepperoni/whatever they have. Its not the best - its usually been sitting around for a little while, not incredibly fresh, etc. - but for the price its a viable alternative. There's 5 stars waiting for you, Salerno's, when you get your act together.

My search for the perfect pizza in Oak Park continues, and Salerno's did not disappoint. I was here to eat a few years ago and remembered enjoying it, so I was looking forward to ordering delivery from here. The thin crust was quite good and apparently they give you a free liter of pop with every delivery. I was surprised, but it's kind of nice! My only gripe is that it's a little expensive, particularly after you pay for tax, delivery, and tip. I'm curious to try some of their other dishes, which are hopefully as good as the pizza. I definitely plan to order from here again!

This review is for the Thin Crust pizza at Salerno's on Roosevelt road near Harlem Ave. Everyone has different tastes and I'll try to explain what I like and what I thought of the pizza. I've only tried the pizza. My quest for a good pizza is not over. The crust they made is the type of crust I like, it's kinda crispy like a thick cracker and it held up well. I really liked the crust. The cheese was okay. Not bad. The sausage was good. However in my opinion, the sauce had no flavor at all for me. I like sauces that have a bit of a tang and a lot of the food I eat is spicy, but this pizza had no real flavor. I even added salt to see if that would help, but it didn't. Everyone in my family thought the same thing. Sauce is a major ingredient and it was a big let down. I wouldn't go back. The other pizza popular around here is Freddy's but I don't like the pizza there too much although I think it may be a bit better then Salerno's/ Also, I thought their pizza was kinda pricey, but if it had been what I wanted, I wouldn't have minded. Service was nice.

I'm giving three stars, having only had pizza and wings thus far. I'm difficult to impress with wings, and these weren't memorable, but the pizza was pretty good. We got delivery and had no issues. Also stopped by late one night for their "slice"...the tasty slice that could feed a family of four! Okay, not four, but two quite generously and three midgets for certain. Could not believe the size of their slice, and cheap! I'm definitely game for trying more of their menu and am only sad for two reasons: 1) Being currently knocked up, their Mocha Jolt is off limits and 2) I missed going there when the one and only Betty Loren Maltese was hostess with the mostess. Would've loved to have my fb profile pic taken with her... : p

I remember the old Salerno's on like 16th Street. Then something happened between the family. One brother opened a restaurant in South Berwyn and the other brother opened a cafe type place called Cappuccino's. Cappuccino's recently closed and the new Salerno's on Roosevelt opened up across the street. I really like going out for pizza as opposed to ordering it for delivery- this is from anywhere, but especially places where one must use a fork and knife to consume the pizza. From either restaurant I like to just order a cheese pan pizza, but with extra sauce and extra cheese. On average I can only eat about two pieces because it is just that decadent and filling. I have had pasta dishes from Salerno's before as well. My aunt, who is not a huge pizza fan, always orders the 8-finger cavatelli with a meatball. At the first Salerno's she used to order the tripe! The dinners are fairly good too, but I just cannot go there and not order the outstanding pizza! The escarole and bean soup is really tasty fresh. This place (places?) has been around for years and it's no surprise why. While not directly in the city, it seems to be one of the only places around the area to get a good and thick pan pizza.

I started drinking their mocha fraps ages ago. They're not the same as they once were, and they're a little smaller, but no matter who makes it they're always pretty good. Unlike most places, I've never had one from Salerno's that was an utter disappointment. To date, Starbucks (before they changed the recipe) has been the only place I've tried that would give Salerno's mocha frap any competition. (I like mine like I like my men... strong & sweet). Whenever I get a mocha frap it's from this place. It's been a very long time since I've dined in (and never at their new location), and back then... I wasn't very impressed by the food. It was edible, but nothing to write home about. Their pizza slices look different than they did back when I tried them. They actually look like they taste pretty good now lol. So, the next time I'm in the mood for a giant slice, I will be going to Salerno's. However, I decided to order their mozzarella sticks tonight, and they were so not good. The manager(?) was very kind, and gave me a refund. He says most people love them, but they're just not for me. If you like giant cheese sticks, you might want to check this place out. They're HUGE, but not enough ... salt/flavor or something for me. They were too thick, and I didn't like the breading either. To each his/her own I guess. The 4 stars are for the mocha fraps. I'll update my review after I've given their pizza a second try.

DELICIOUS pizza. Great compliment to a Bear's game (and win). The woman on the phone was helpful when I placed my order for delivery. It is refreshing when you can actually HEAR the person on the phone. Great job Salernos!
(4)W S.
This is not good pizza. Ordered a large pizza with one topping, it was over $18. The pizza itself was small. There was very little of the topping on it, the crust was chewy, there was almost no sauce, and a greasy, thick layer of cheese. Bad.
(1)Tina M.
Been eating there pizza for years and love it. My favorite is the pineapple and pepperoni. Yummy
(4)Mary Ann K.
Pretty good pizza although I would not say that I absolutely loved it. I enjoyed it enough though that I ended up ordering it again for delivery to my house. At the restaurant, the service was slow and the waiter seemed apologetic about it. Perhaps next time we eat there, it will be better. Finally, I literally just ordered over the phone. The person who took my order (for delivery to my house) was actually quite rude in the way she interacted with me. As I am not a regular, this is certainly not a good experience as it is making me pause as to whether I would order food there again for delivery.

so here goes the table was small, too many plates and glasses and we didnt have much room on the table, that was very annoying, the place is cute, family owned it looks like, you can get a slice to go or you can sit in the restaurant area. So the bread is very good, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, they did give us olive oil but no parm :(, we got the calamari for our app, its a pretty big plate and it was pretty good, and a x-large pizza, half veggie and half meat lovers, and both were on the specialty list so the waitress was like uh ok I will need to figure out how to add that, okay since they are both specialty and half meat and half veggie, shouldn't it just be the same price? anyway no she had to add each ingredient? so we get the regular crust, it was good but not great, I like my pizza to have more sauce and prob should have gotten the thin crust, the meat side looked like it did have more sauce...I didnt try that side-however the other people in my party thought it was pretty good..oh then we asked the waitress for crushed pepper and parm and it seemed like a chore for her to get that to us, that was pretty annoying-uh isnt that your job....I would prob go back, get the calamari, get a cheese thin crust and hopefully a better waitress who would be happy to get some parm and crushed pepper for us... I do have to say the other staff was very friendly and accomodating...like the bus staff...

You have to make sure you are at the right Salerno's... The one on Roosevelt is the place for me. The bartender was very helpful and competent while the server was less then stellar. This was my first experience eating in, generally my parents simply make the drive and bring the pizza home for me to consume in lightening speed. The atmosphere was great, we ate in the bar area and ended the night drinking at the bar. My only compliant is that is they built this new site from scratch, why so small which such narrow doorways? Overall - the pizza is excellent although very bready and the cheese raviolis are the best I have ever had. It's worth checking out.

Almost all the reviews below are for the pizza, which I've never had here. I like Salerno's because they have excellent table bread and really good, homey, and comforting Italian food. One person reviewed the baked mostacolli and called the sauce bland. He said he "warmed it up next day after adding some Ragu sauce and it was then much better." Oh my God! Ragu. Really? That review automatically no longer counts. I took my mom here for lunch today because we both wanted home style Italian food but neither one of us wanted to cook. I started with the Escarole Soup. It was a little too salty but had plenty of Escarole and beans. We ordered the Braciole with Angel Hair and split it. That was a good idea because the order was huge. We each had enough to bring home. The meat was really tender and the breadcrumb filling comforting. The sauce, we agreed, was tasty and not too pasty. My mother entertained me with stories of how her mother learned her Italian cooking more from my grandfather's dad, who had owned a restaurant on Taylor street, than her own mother. "Do you remember her Braciole?" My mother pronounces it: "Brazhole." Pasta Faggioli sounds like "Fazhole" and Manicotti sounds like "Man-eh-got." Anyway, Salerno's "Brazhole" is similar to my grandmother's. I've never been here for dinner but it's never crowded at lunch time so give that a try. Our waiter was excellent. Also, contrary to another review posted here, I got free refills on my pop. My mother scolded me for tipping too high and off we went to Turano's for some cannoli.

I've lived in Oak Park for 8 years and this was my first time to Salerno's. I wish I had come sooner. The pizza was thick (the thin crust is like most place's regular crust), sauce was flavorful, and the sausage was just spicy enough. The waiter was friendly and helpful. The decor is classy. It looks more like a nice Italian restaurant than a neighborhood pizza joint. There doesn't appear to be a lot of seating, but we had no trouble getting a spot. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better pizza experience.
(5)Ray N.
We've been ordering from Salerno's before the two brothers left the 16th St location and formed 2 rival locations. The thin and thick pizzas are radically different, as at least for me their thick crust takes away from the toppings, including sauce, because there is not enough sauce and the large amount of dough makes it very dry in your mouth. Which is odd, because I usually like thick-crust. Flavor on either crust is great, however, and the ingredients are top-notch for a mid-range Italian restaurant. We've also gotten various chicken dishes and even the occasional ribs, and they are all very good. Just know that you may want to order ahead of time if you don't want to wait a half hour or more for your food.
(4)Mike A.
I love their orignal crust pizza the best. Yummy desserts. Was disappointed with their baked Mostacolli - the sauce was very bland. I ended up eating only a portion of it and then took it home - warmed it up next day after adding some Ragu sauce and it was then much better. Their alfredo sauce is OK, but could be better. Atmosphere is top notch, but can be kind of crowded at times and loud. Limitted self parking, but they do have complementary valet parking. I highly recommend going there and trying it out - we're making our way thru the menu to try something different everytime we go.
(4)Scott T.
so here I am again. It has been about 2 years or so since I have ordered from this place because of the really bad service (pizza delivery). This place is like 5 min from my house yet it takes them almost 2 hours to deliver? I know what you are thinking...go pick it up but sometimes you want it delivered. Anyways, I got a pizza from here and it took almost 2 hours to deliver it and then when it came it had almost NO sauce on it. I called and the girl on the phone was rude and did not believe. She said they will deliver it but might take another hour or more?! Or bring it back to them. Are you kidding me?! The pizza is good but not $25 for 16inch good. The lesson here is bad service and way overpriced leads to me not going back now for over 2 years. Things happen and I understand that but its the way the are fixed and they left a really bad taste in my mouth.

While I think the pizza prices are pretty over the top, I do love to visit the restaurant. The service is excellent. Very friendly and go out of thier way to make you welcome. Love that it is family friendly. Half orders are a bonus. Try the chicken salerno, it is the bomb. For appetizer be sure to have the calamari, it is so tender. The kids love it too! On the way have a scoop of the Gelato they sell, it is extremely tasty. In particular the Boconnotto. The bar is nice to drop in for a drink and appetizers.
(4)rachel p.
our group was large, our waiter seemed confused. the thick crust was doughy (slighly underdone), suited to my taste, but probably not to most. the garlic bread was good, the fried stuff was... fried. overall, fairly 'meh.'
(3)Giacomo M.
The four of us had dinner there last week, not pizza. Talk about abodanzza, mamma mia. I had the braciole, brazio in Sicilian, not like nonna's (grandmas) but damn good and two huge ones that were impossible to finish. My table mates had the combo and Salerno's chicken, which was chicken vesuvio with sausage. We had dinner for two nights afterwrds. Also our guest from Wisconsin, had three huge perch; and just like in Wisconsin, breaded and deep fat fried. Friday night fish fry, she loved it. The wine and food was reasonably priced. Excellent service.

I've been a life long Salerno's customer, we've stopped ordering take out from them due to really long wait time and we live a mile away! I also think there pizza is a little expensive and you'll wake up at 2 a.m needing an entire glass of water! Tonight we had friends over and that's what they wanted, got some pasta's which were okay the pizza was not what i ordered and when I called to complain the phone girl proceeded to tell me how I got it wrong, so not only did we wait over an hour for the wrong dinner, she wasn't gracious enough to say I'm really sorry I thought you said xyz. I ordered half toppings and half cheese and when you say HALF cheese that is all I expect on it!!! We never have this problem when we order from Amato's who we love is well under an hour and always hot! Bye Salerno's I'm done with you.

Moved across Roosevelt Rd - now 7128 W. (same phone). Been eating/ordering Pizza from Salerno's since early '70s when they were one place at the corner of 16th St & Clarence in Berwyn. But around 2000 they splintered (as alluded to in other posts), and this one on Roosevelt's called Joe Salerno's and continues to get my devoted business even though I don't live near them and never have. There's is a 'Pan' style pizza, and the way I like it is w/ extra cheese, your choice of meat topping, then you make a semi-salad out of it by adding things like green peppers, onions, mushrooms, maybe also olives. If some complain they're a bit pricey I assure you the X-Large 16" size is a very good deal. I'da given a full 5*, but once I tried to get them to deliver to my home (judging by their limits I lived 4 blocks out of range) and they accepted my phone order even though I was very clear about my location first. But 20 mins later they called to cancel, saying I was too far (must've been short on drivers that night). To finish on a positive note, my young sons used to quietly cheer when they learned the pizzeria their Dad decided to order/pick-up from that particular Fri. nite was Salerno's.
(4)Dominic C.
Pizza and mozzarella sticks are quite tasty, the atmosphere pleasing. The staff and celebrity hostess were quite nice The stuffed artichoke appetizer needs to be skipped.
(4)Kimberly K.
I like the atmosphere and the pizza. We have dined outside both times. I really like the slightly thick, but crispy crust. Great place! Try it!
(4)joel l.
really good pizza. Second best I've had in chicago and this one delivers to my house! the best crust of any pizza. sauce is ok, cheese is good. Nice for drinks, very nice dine in area off to the side. the italian food is much better than average for a pizza joint.
(4)Emily O.
I have tried there pizza once, and never will again. The extra large pizza I ordered seemed to have enough toppings, cheese and sauce for a medium pizza at best. The crust wasn't terrible, but overall the pizza was very dry due to the lack of sauce. If I ever go back, I will be sure to try something else.
(2)fabiola b.
The single pizza slices are pretty good especially if your lucky to get one right out of the oven. I have had eaten in the restaurant also but unless you are getting pizza I believe it is over priced. I ate there a few nights ago with a few friends and we always get the same waiter, he is horrible! He is snobby and also forgot about us a few times we had other waiters and staff actually bring out some of our items i.e. iced teas (that he forgot to bring out) also in mid meal we were pawned off to another waiter. Whom by the way did a good job always checking on us. I had the ribs they are ok nothing spectacular. I say it is over priced because we ended up getting a pitcher of raspberry iced tea and refills are not free we had to pay $5 for a refill! what a joke! The salad before our main course was suppose to have Italian dressing but it was drenched in a balsamic super oily dressing. I must admit the cannoli are pretty good. I will return for pizza but nothing else.
